Two photos from Clive both taken at Badbury Rings on 14/05/2023 and sent in telling us:

Another very good day searching for anything butterfly related  – there were lots of Dingy Skippers including this mating pair and then I saw my first Common Blue of the year (3 of them in total).  Green Hairstreaks were plentiful and I almost but not quite got a Small Heath with its wings open but it was blurred so I will have keep trying for that one.

The sunshine made it a memorable day for Clive yesterday, 13/05/2023  and he sent in these photos to share with us all some of the butterflies he had seen.  The Marsh Fritillary was taken at Lydlinch Common where he told us this was the only one of this species he saw there. The next place he visited was Fontmell Down where he saw 3 or 4 more Marsh Fritillaries, the Brown Argus in this photo  plus a further 10 species.

This is the second of three postings of White Admirals at Piddles Wood I am adding to the Gallery today.

The photos were taken on 19/06/2022 and sent in by Clive who told us:

Two other butterfly fans found these and called me over – I’ve never seen more than one at a time before let alone a mating pair.  It was a good day.

Verity sent in this photo of a Green Hairstreak she saw at Cerne Abbas on 10/05/2022 telling us:

I have fallen a little more in love with these tiny fluffy beauties. It’s been a fun few days exploring parts of Dorset – it’s all been so worth it to see these vibrant, metallic jewels of the Butterfly world.

Verity sent in these two photos taken at Cerne Abbas on 12/06/2021 telling us:

My friend spotted this butterfly when we were out walking early yesterday morning – a Small Copper which was an aberrant. I got some photos – absolutely beautiful. It was back & white. What a little jewel.

Editor’s Note:  Sometimes butterflies do not show the usual markings of the species, and these are known as aberrations. Photos of some known Small Copper aberrations can be found online at britishbutterflyaberrations.co.uk
