Rod says he was pleased to see the first butterfly he’s had this year on his front garden wildflower patch in Mudeford [30/5/25]

We like the idea that this is his front garden – lets hope lots of other people try the same idea.

Rod says:

We took a walk today [13/5/25] along  our favoured path for Green Hairstreaks on Hengistbury Head and were not disappointed.  We saw many more than we have see here before and took lots of photos but I was particularly pleased with this very well marked and fresh individual.  This same spot is usually very good for Purple Hairstreaks later in the season so we are very hopeful.

It’s helpful to hear of good butterfly spots in the conurbation.

Rod reports:

Plenty of Wood Whites again today from the sea defences to the east of Lyme.  Please find attached a couple of representative photos.  On the mating pair it looks as if the female had not even finished pumping up her wings before attracting the attention of the male.

The Wood White is only found in this location in Dorset, and it is not common anywhere in the UK. It is being reported a bit earlier this year than last: the first record sent in was 27 April, while last year it was 8 May.

Rod tells us:

We went for a gentle amble today (27/4/25) along the linear park by the river Mude in Mudeford/Christchurch.  Pleasantly surprised to see this beautifully fresh Common Blue male on an open patch backing onto some houses. Also saw a Green Veined White and many Speckled Woods.
