We were fortunate to have our first Painted Lady of the year in our garden at Conygar, near Broadmayne this afternoon (7 July 2025). An absolutely stunning specimen that found the lavender flowers to be particularly attractive.

Rod says he was pleased to see the first butterfly he’s had this year on his front garden wildflower patch in Mudeford [30/5/25]

We like the idea that this is his front garden – lets hope lots of other people try the same idea.

I went on the Cerne Abbas butterfly walk led by Paul Butter [17/5/25] to look for the Duke of Burgundy and Marsh Fritillaries, of which I saw one Duke but plenty of Marsh. It was a very enjoyable slow walk with plenty of time to stop, chat and discuss the different species including moths and plants.

I took this photo of a Painted lady this morning (11/5/2025) at Dewlands Common, Verwood. The first one I have seen this year. There were also Brimstones, Speckled woods and a Green hairstreak, as well as lots of heath moths.

The sunshine and warmth this morning brought an unexpected flurry of late autumn butterflies to our garden including this Painted Lady and Red Admiral.  Also seen on the Ivy flowers were two Commas.
