There are various historical analyses of Dorset’s butterfly records showing distribution of species. In reverse chronological order:

  • 2016 analysis, comparing long-term trends of 1970-1984 with 2000-2014, and short-term trends of 1995-1999 with 2010-2014. This was only published as part of this website.
  • 2000-2004 “Dorset’s Butterfly Population 2000-2004” was produced by the Dorset Branch of Butterfly Conservation in A4 format.
  • 1995-1999 “Dorset’s Millennium butterfly Population” was produced by the Dorset Branch of Butterfly Conservation in A4 format.
  • ‘New Atlas of Dorset Butterflies’ (1998) by Jeremy Thomas, Richard Surrey, Bill Shreeves & Carolyn Steele, published by the Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society. This updates ‘Butterflies of Dorset’ and takes the records up to 1997. Out of print, but second-hand copies come up from time to time.
  • ‘Butterflies of Dorset’ (1984) by Jeremy Thomas & Nigel Webb, published by the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society. This mainly covers 1970-1984, but pulls on older records for rarer species. Out of print, but second-hand copies come up from time to time.
