These were two of the butterflies in my garden at Chalmington, late in the afternoon, on 15/8/2025.

The yellow of the underwing of the pristine Green-veined White is almost a match for that of the male Brimstone!

The Brimstones seem to be the only butterflies who will feed on my Zinnias, and in particular they seem to favour the pink ones. They often sit on a single bloom for long periods feeding from each yellow disk floret in turn.  In the picture here I like the complementary texture of the yellow florets and the underside of the thorax of the butterfly!

I was doing some survey work near Sydling St Nicholas today, 06/08/2025 and found this pristine Small Tortoiseshell.

Also, the amazing spectacle of many Small and Green-veined Whites getting minerals from Swan droppings! There were probably ~30 individuals in one spot.

Another nicely coloured female Common Blue, this time almost in my backyard! Also a fresh Green-veined White that often seem to appear at this point in the season with those amazingly bright yellow forewings.

From Brian:

Today our first Green-veined White appeared in our garden at Harman’s Cross near Swanage. This is our eighth butterfly species this year in our garden. Butterflies seem to be appearing earlier this year than in 2024. By this time last year we had seen just 4 species in our garden.

So far in the garden this year we have seen Red Admiral, Peacock, Comma, Speckled Wood, Large White, Green-veined White, Orange Tip and Brimstone.
