I delayed adding this photo which Brian took in April 2020 to the Gallery as I thought it would be such an uplifting image to look at as we approach the shortest day of the year. Brian took this photo on a walk from his home in Harman’s Cross via Nine Borrow Down to Brenscombe Wood and Brenscome Hill.

I went for a very windy walk on Upton Heath this afternoon, 23/05/2020 and really did not expect to see any butterflies, but took my camera with me just in case.  I was surprised to see a Green Hairstreak in the area where I have had previous sightings, and even more surprised when I saw this mating pair!

I presume that the tatty one on the right is the male, unless anyone would like to correct me on this?

A couple of shots from Giant Hill at Cerne Abbas, taken on 15/05/2020 and sent to us by Mark Pike with the following comments:

A nice Duke of Burgundy and a Green Hairstreak unusually captured whilst it briefly took nectar from a flower, although they do take nectar it is quite rare to actually witness it, they are far more likely to be seen guarding their territory in a nearby bush.

To celebrate her release from some of the restrictions of lockdown, Lynda went to Badbury Rings on 12/05/2020 and has sent us these photos with the following comments:

After being  unable to drive for a walk until recently it was great to see so many butterflies at Badbury Rings on my visit.  I counted 75, without trying very hard, of 15 species. I rarely see Grizzled Skippers but to see a group of three either in a territorial battle or courting, I know not which, was lovely.  Saw my first Green Hairstreak of the year too, up close and personal.

Whilst out walking a few days ago Clive spotted a number of butterflies and these are photos of just two of the species he saw – this Green Hairstreak on 08/05/2020 and the Orange Tips on the next day, 09/05/2020.  He added that the photo of the Orange Tips mating was very much a case of being in the right place at the right time.

This afternoon, 26/04/2020 I went to Upton Heath and saw my first Green Hairstreak of the year, just a few feet from where I took my last Green Hairstreak photo of 2019.  The first photo shows a glimpse of upperwing, as his wings were slightly blown apart by the breeze. The second shows him perching with wings angled to the sun – he spent some time in the same area, flying from one leaf to another.

Brian has sent us these photos he took on 19/04/2020 with the following comment:

Today we walked across the fields from our house in Harman’s Cross to Ailwood Down. At the base of the hill there were lots of butterflies including the first Clouded Yellow I have seen this year – alas no photo!  We also saw Brimstone, Holly Blue, Green Hairstreak, Peacock, Orange Tip, Speckled Wood, Comma, Small White, Red Admiral.

Paul sent us this photo taken on 16/04/2020 of his first Green Hairstreak of the season with the following comment:

One of three I saw at the foot of Ballard Down this afternoon, one of which engaged in a dogfight with two Holly Blues.

Green Hairstreak. Photo: Wren Franklin

Being the only British butterfly with a green underside to the wings can make it difficult to spot amongst the spring foliage but Wren found and photographed this early one (his first this year) at the private Ryewater Nursery in North Dorset on 08/04/2020.

This was seen 7 days earlier than the first one reported to the Dorset BC website last year which was on 15/04/2019.
