Garry was intrigued to see this Hummingbird Hawkmoth on 26/08/26 at Durlston Country Park flying continuously over grasses at low level, apparently investigating the vegetation, though not settling and eventually flying away.

It’s possible that this moth was searching. Their absolute favourite host plant group is Bedstraw which have tiny, inconspicuous green leaves and small flowers that easily tangle deep inside grass. The female will hover inches from the ground, dipping down persistently to inspect and feel the plants with her legs and antennae to ensure she has found the correct food source before placing an egg.
