Four White Holes to fill with only 29 days left

As we said in an earlier article, we are trying to beat our previous record of filling 2609 (89.5%) of the kilometre squares in Dorset with at least one butterfly record.

As of now (1 December) we are up to 2,606: just 4 squares short of beating our record.

“White Holes” is our term for kilometre squares in Dorset in which no butterflies have been reported in the current five-year recording cycle, which ends at the end of December 2024.

It is possible that sightings coming from sources other than this website will fill one or more, but if you see a butterfly in any of the White Holes, please report it.

There is an area around Bournemouth Hospital which is still blank, and there is open space in that area, as well as a lot of people.

The way to find out where the other gaps are is to go to our White Holes page.

Our congratulations to the gentleman who reported a Red Admiral at Shell Bay near Studland in November – most of that square is water, so we hope he didn’t get wet!

Ref White Holes post 2/12, Hants branch still record Bmth and Xchrch area (following historic county boundary changes) for their reports. e.g. record in 2023 at Holdenhurst for W-L Hairstreak. Can we adopt these or does this go against protocol?
