Our very grateful thanks to all of you who have been out filling our “white holes” – kilometre squares where no butterflies have been reported to us in since 2020. We still haven’t quite matched our record in 2015-19, but it’s not too late.In 2015-19 we had butterfly reports from 2609 kilometre squares. Currently we have 2,574 squares “filled”.

If you possibly can, have a look at the white holes page and see if there are any gaps you could try to fill. We are still receiving reports of common species such as Large and Small Whites, Red Admirals, Commas, Common Blues, Green-veined Whites, Meadow Browns and Speckled Woods. Less frequently-seen species are also being reported – see our recent sightings page; these include Painted Ladies  and even one Clouded Yellow: both butterflies that come to us across the Channel.

The weather looks good at least for the next few days (this is being written on 15 September), so we could make it yet!

Report your sightings via our butterfly recording form.
