Dave found this Eyed Hawkmoth Caterpillar in his garden near Duncliffe Wood, Shaftesbury on 20/08/18and tells us:

This near fully grown Eyed Hawk caterpillar has been stripping the stems on the apple tree in our garden. It won’t be long before it goes underground and pupates for the winter .

These caterpillars can be found between late June -September, sometimes later and will overwinter underground below or near the caterpillar foodplant.
