The nation-wide ‘Wider Countryside Scheme’ (WCS) helps Butterfly Conservation to assess the state of butterflies generally, not just at butterfly hot-spots. It is not a very demanding monitoring system as it only calls for you to walk once in July and once in August, though an earlier visit as well would be good. The route of the walk is set, and only about a kilometer each way.

We would be grateful for offers to walk in any part of the County, but we are particularly looking for walkers to do:

ST6418 Oborne (on the edge of Sherborne)

ST5310 (Near Hooke, Between Maiden Newton and Beaminster)

SY6198 Maiden Newton

SY6617 Sherborne

SY6774 and SY6973 Portland

Dorset has been doing more of these walks than any other County, so please help us keep up our record! You can see more about the national scheme and its results on the Butterfly Conservation website.
