Humming-bird Hawk-moths

Keep your eye out for the Humming-bird Hawk-moth, which looks like a tiny humming bird.

You will see itaround flowers, with its incredibly long proboscis going down into the flower to suck up the nectar.

The picture from John Van Crugten was taken in his garden in Weymouth, and he actually had four visible at the same time!

If you see one, please report it to Butterfly Conservation’s Migrant Watch. The map  of sightings is showing a lot in Dorset during July and August, so you may well be lucky.
