Lydlinch: A couple of moths seen at workparty: Ypsolpha mucronella, which feeds on Spindle and is quite local, a moth with long pointed tan coloured forewings that overwinters in deep undergrowth as an adult. Small Tortoiseshells and a Brimstone at Hatch Pond, Poole. Brimstones, Small Tortoiseshells, Peacocks, Commas and a Speckled Wood were seen at Leigh Common, Wimborne. An Orange Tip was seen in a garden at West Moors. 13th. Comma and Speckled Wood at Hatch Pond, Poole. A Small Tortoiseshell, a Peacock and a female Orange Tip were in a garden at Winfrith Newburgh. 12th. Small Tortoiseshell in a garden in Bournemouth. Brimstones, a Peacock, a Small Tortoiseshell and a Comma seen at Tadnoll. March 2004 30th. Small Tortoiseshell at Hatch Pond, near Poole. 29th. Brimstone at Wimborne By-pass. 21st. Red Admiral seen in between showers near the Stour at Castle Lane in Bournemouth. Small Tortoiseshell in a garden in Winton. 17th. Small Tortoiseshells, Painted Ladies and a Brimstone seen at Motcombe. 16th. Several Brimstones were seen at Colehill, near Wimborne. 15th. Small Tortoiseshells and a Brimstone seen at Uddens, near Ferndown. 7th. Two Small Tortoiseshells seen between sleet showers at Motcombe. 6th. A Painted Lady was seen on the beach between Charmouth and Lyme Regis at around 15.00. It came in fast and low over the sea travelling at around 25-30 mph, flying about 3 ft off the ground/sea. It flew straight towards the cliff and then flew up almost vertically, hugging the cliff face and keeping about the same distance from it. 50 ft up it disappeared over the top, still travelling at high speed. February 2004 26th. A Small Tortoiseshell and a Comma seen at Mere. 19th. Fifteen Painted Ladies were seen at West Bexington. 18th. A few Painted Ladies were seen at Portland Bill and Weston. 17th. A Painted Lady in a Southbourne garden, and another at West Moors. One Painted Lady was seen at Portland Observatory. 15th. A Painted Lady seen again in a Wareham garden. 14th. A Painted Lady was seen in a Wareham garden and a few were seen on Portland. 13th. A Painted Lady was seen at Arne. 12th. A Painted Lady was seen at Studland. 11th. A Painted Lady and a Comma were seen in Dorchester.
9th. A Painted Lady and several Small Tortoiseshells were
seen at Sutton Poyntz, and another Painted Lady at Southbourne and at
Hengistbury Head.
7th. A probable sighting of a Small Tortoiseshell at Winfrith Newburgh. Three Painted Ladies were seen in Bridport, one in Corscombe and several on Portland. 6th. Four Painted Ladies seen at Tadnoll DWT Reserve, and a couple were seen in Bridport. Two Painted Ladies were seen at West Stafford and six on Portland. 4th. Painted ladies seen in a Poole garden and at Lower Hyde Heath, and also on Portland. Painted Lady seen in a garden in Merley near Wimborne. January 2004 18th. Small Tortoiseshell seen at Bourton near Gillingham. 12th. Red Admiral at Sutton Poyntz near Weymouth. 6th. A Small Tortoiseshell seen near the Post Office in Winfrith Newburgh. This, I presume, is not the same one which was let out of a loft at Holt Forest, near Wimborne, this morning. Apparently, Small Tortoiseshells and Peacocks seem to regularly hibernate in this particular loft, but some wake early, and are then "released".

Red Admirals, Painted Ladies, Large and Small Whites and Small Tortoiseshells in a garden in Bournemouth, and a Hummingbird Hawkmoth in another Bournemouth Garden. 30th. Speckled Woods, Large and Small Whites and Red Admirals at Iford, Bournemouth. Painted Ladies, Red Admirals, Large and Small Whites and a Hummingbird Hawkmoth in a garden in Bournemouth. Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth in Gillingham. 27th. Hummingbird Hawkmoth in a garden in Bournemouth, and also at Canford Magna near Wimborne. 26th. Hummingbird Hawkmoth in a garden at Creekmoor, Poole, Long-tailed Blue at Ham Common. 25th. Hummingbird Hawkmoth in a garden at Creekmoor, Poole. 24th. Hummingbird Hawkmoth in garden at Merley, near Wimborne, and two in a garden in Dorchester. 23rd. Painted Ladies, Red Admirals, Large and Small Whites and a Hummingbird Hawkmoth in a garden in Bournemouth. 22nd. Adonis Blues at Osmington. 21st. Gillingham: as well as the fairly usual species such as Silver Y, Dark Sword grass, a Small Mottled Willow (S.exigua), and the much scarcer Ni moth (Trichoplusia ni)was trapped by MV light. The Pyrales Udea ferrugalis and Nomophila noctuella (Rush Veneer) were also recorded. A male Clouded Yellow was also seen, indicating a good migration of a variety of Lepidoptera. It would be worth scrutinising any small, browner looking Silver Y moths as the Ni moth is quite similar. 17th. Br | |||||||||
