17th. A lot of Small Blues and Walls were seen at Broadcroft Quarry.

16th. Two Walls were seen on Upton Heath.

15th. Grizzled Skippers, Green Hairstreak, Small Copper and Cinnabar Moth seen at Lulworth Army Ranges.
Many Walls on the SW Coast Path, especially in the Mupe Bay area.
Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth seen at Giant Hill.

14th. Walls, a Small Copper and a Speckled Wood seen on the ridge walk of Lulworth Army Ranges between Kimmeridge and Tyneham.

13th. Small Whites, Holly Blues, a Wall, a Drinker caterpillar and large numbers of Brown Tails were seen at Portland.

11th. Small Yellow Underwing Moths seen at Hatch Pond, Poole.

10th. Ruby Tiger and Small Yellow Underwing Moths, Orange Tip and Small White seen at Hatch Pond, Poole.

7th. Small Whites, Orange Tips, a Peacock, a Speckled Wood and a Small Copper seen at Hatch Pond, Poole.

2nd. Narrow-bordered Bee Hawk-moth seen on Ground Ivy in Duncliffe Wood.
Orange Tips, Wall Browns, Holly Blues, Dingy Skippers, Small Whites, Small Coppers, a Red Admiral and some Speckled Woods, as well as a Peacock, a Comma and several Green Hairstreaks were seen at Ballard Down.

April 2004

27th. A Holly Blue, several Speckled Woods and an Orange Tip were seen at Hatch Pond, Poole.

26th. A Holly Blue was seen in a garden in Bournemouth.

25th. A Small White was seen in Bournemouth.

24th. A Comma was seen at Upton Country Park.
Many Brimstones, Small Tortoiseshells, a Red Admiral, several Orange Tips and a Small White were seen at Moors Valley Country Park.
A Holly Blue and two Speckled Woods were seen in a garden in Shaftesbury. A Large White, a Comma, several Holly Blues and Speckled Woods were seen in Shaftesbury.
Wall Browns were seen on the Coast Path from Lulworth to Kimmeridge.

23rd. A Small Tortoiseshell, a male Brimstone, a female Orange Tip and several Speckled Woods were seen at Hatch Pond, Poole.
An Orange Tip was seen in a garden in Colehill, near Wimborne.
Two Grizzled Skippers were seen at Fontmell Down.

22nd. Lots of Small Tortoiseshells and a male Brimstone at Hatch Pond, Poole.

20th. A Holly Blue was seen in a garden at Winfrith Newburgh.

14th. Small Tortoiseshells and a Brimstone at Hatch Pond, Poole. Brimstones, Small Tortoiseshells, Peacocks, Commas and a Speckled Wood were seen at Leigh Common, Wimborne. An Orange Tip was seen in a garden at West Moors.

13th. Comma and Speckled Wood at Hatch Pond, Poole. A Small Tortoiseshell, a Peacock and a female Orange Tip were in a garden at Winfrith Newburgh.

March 2004

30th. Small Tortoiseshell at Hatch Pond, near Poole.

29th. Brimstone at Wimborne By-pass.

21st. Red Admiral seen in between showers near the Stour at Castle Lane in Bournemouth. Small Tortoiseshell in a garden in Winton.

17th. Small Tortoiseshells, Painted Ladies and a Brimstone seen at Motcombe.

16th. Several Brimstones were seen at Colehill, near Wimborne.

15th. Small Tortoiseshells and a Brimstone seen at Uddens, near Ferndown.

7th. Two Small Tortoiseshells seen between sleet showers at Motcombe.

6th. A Painted Lady was seen on the beach between Charmouth and Lyme Regis at around 15.00. It came in fast and low over the sea travelling at around 25-30 mph, flying about 3 ft off the ground/sea. It flew straight towards the cliff and then flew up almost vertically, hugging the cliff face and keeping about the same distance from it. 50 ft up it disappeared over the top, still travelling at high speed.

February 2004

18th. A few Painted Ladies were seen at Portland Bill and Weston.

17th. A Painted Lady in a Southbourne garden, and another at West Moors. One Painted Lady was seen at Portland Observatory.

15th. A Painted Lady seen again in a Wareham garden.

14th. A Painted Lady was seen in a Wareham garden and a few were seen on Portland.

13th. A Painted Lady was seen at Arne.

12th. A Painted Lady was seen at Studland.
A Hummingbird Hawkmoth was found amongst Primulas in a Gillingham High Street florist.

11th. A Painted Lady and a Comma were seen in Dorchester.
A Painted Lady, a Red Admiral and several Peacocks were seen at Winfrith Technology Centre and a Painted Lady was seen at Bridport.
Two Painted Ladies were seen at Maiden Newton.
100 Painted Ladies were seen on Portland!!!

9th. A Painted Lady and several Small Tortoiseshells were seen at Sutton Poyntz, and another Painted Lady at Southbourne and at Hengistbury Head.
A Red Admiral was seen at West Moors. Two Painted Ladies were seen at the Brewery at Blandford St Mary.
Two Painted Ladies were seen at Martinstown and a Painted Lady at Bridport.
Two Painted Ladies were seen at Thorncombe Woods near Dorchester, one in Poole and several on Portland.


8th. Painted Ladies seen at Tadnoll, in a garden at Broadmayne, and in a garden at Mudeford.
Small Tortoiseshell in St Albans Church in Charminster, Bournemouth.
Painted Lady also seen at Perryfields Butterfly Reserve on Portland during the Work Party's lunch break and seven were seen at Portland Bill.
Three Painted Ladies were seen in Bridport, and several at Swanage Sea Front.
A peacock was seen in a garden at Corfe Mullen, and a Painted Lady at Stanpit in Christchurch.
Fourteen Painted Ladies were seen at Ballard Down!
In addition there were Painted Ladies seen at Corscombe, Broadmayne, near West Stafford, on the edge of Dorchester and at Weymouth.

7th. A probable sighting of a Small Tortoiseshell at Winfrith Newburgh. Three Painted Ladies were seen in Bridport, one in Corscombe and several on Portland.

6th. Four Painted Ladies seen at Tadnoll DWT Reserve, and a couple were seen in Bridport. Two Painted Ladies were seen at West Stafford and six on Portland.

4th. Painted ladies seen in a Poole garden and at Lower Hyde Heath, and also on Portland. Painted Lady seen in a garden in Merley near Wimborne.

January 2004

18th. Small Tortoiseshell seen at Bourton near Gillingham.

12th. Red Admiral at Sutton Poyntz near Weymouth.

6th. A Small Tortoiseshell seen near the Post Office in Winfrith Newburgh. This, I presume, is not the same one which was let out of a loft at Holt Forest, near Wimborne, this morning. Apparently, Small Tortoiseshells and Peacocks seem to regularly hibernate in this particular loft, but some wake early, and are then "released".

21st. Gillingham: as well as the fairly usual species such as Silver Y, Dark Sword grass, a Small Mottled Willow (S.exigua), and the much scarcer Ni moth (Trichoplusia ni)was trapped by MV light. The Pyrales Udea ferrugalis and Nomophila noctuella (Rush Veneer) were also recorded. A male Clouded Yellow was also seen, indicating a good migration of a variety of Lepidoptera. It would be worth scrutinising any small, browner looking Silver Y moths as the Ni moth is quite similar.
