BUTTERFLY AND MOTH SIGHTINGS IN DORSET Check here for any recent butterfly and moth sightings....
To submit YOUR sightings, either go to our on-line form, or drop us an e-mail. During the summer months, we have regular visits from migrants such as the Monarch, Pale Clouded Yellows and we also get the Valezina form of the Silver-washed Fritillary at sites throughout Dorset. For the past couple of years, we have also had visits from Swallowtails by the coast. May 2008 7th. Fontmell Down: Dingy Skipper; Small Copper, Green Hairstreak and Holly Blue. 6th. Peacock 3,
Large White 1,
Speckled Wood 2. Quite poor really. Thanks, Mark. 22nd. Alners Gorse walked today in good weather, 17 ºC and 100% sunshine time.
Butterflies in the sheltered areas, 2 Brimstones (m), 1 Orange Tip (m), 3 Peacocks and 2 Speckled Woods.
There was also an unidentified small white butterfly in Sector 7, the elusive Small/Green-veined/female Orange Tip butterfly. Alas I had no net and it did not settle. 2 deer also in S 7. Best Wishes, Brian 20th. Highcliffe: Holly Blues and Peacocks. 17th. Symondsbury: Red Admiral, Peacocks and Comma. Also Orange Underwing Moth. 16th. Did the Deadmoor Common Transect today and although there was a 13 ºC southerly wind, it was warmer in the sheltered areas. The totals recorded were 10 Peacocks, 6 Commas and 1 each Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone. So in spite of the poor showing of the Peacock last year, there are at Deadmoor in numbers. I also saw a Brimstone at Cornford Bridge, near Holwell.
Best Wishes, Brian Dicker. 15th. Durlston Country Park: Clouded Yellow, Speckled Wood, Wall Brown. 14th. I managed to do the Alners Gorse Transect today in marginal weather conditions of 13 ºC and 96% sunshine time, but was delighted to see 5 Brimstones (m), with 3 flying together in Sector 5, and a Comma. There was also a Speckled Wood near the Hunting Gate in Sector 7.
But driving home, near the Green Man pub in King's Stag, an Orange Tip flew in front of the car.

Brownsea Island: CAMBERWELL BEAUTY. 25th. Portland: Large White. A wonderful 40th Birthday present for Butterfly Conservation was finding 17 webs of Marsh Fritillary caterpillars on Lankham Bottom on 6th and 7th of March. Branch member Chris Paul found the first group and Bridget de Whalley and Colin Burningham 5 more. John Davis, reserve manager found another 11 groups ( minimal web as we think they had only just become active). The work party dug out brambles and cut gorse to improve Grizzled Skipper and Small Copper habitats.
A DAY of ACTION success story.
Best wishes, Lawrie.

Regards, Jennie Peters. 11 February at Maiden Newton, pristine Peacock in sheltered sunshine. Best regards, Malcolm Wemyss. I was taking a school trip to Portland Castle on 11.2

at rest. This seemed bizarre to me - has anyone any comparable sightings?
