Perryfields Reserve is 1.2 hectares (3 acres) of infilled quarry with a limestone cap. This plateau has grasses, Birds-foot Trefoil, Horseshoe Vetch and Kidney Vetch in its sward. The slopes down to the disused railway rack are scrub-covered and provide shelter for birds and roosting places for insects. Management is carried out to stop the scrub encroaching onto the grassland. The Reserve was leased in 1998 by Butterfly Conservation. It acts as a transit site for occasional visitors. The Reserve has 10 breeding species of butterfly included in the target list. Their caterpillars use mainly grass and vetches as foodplants. Butterflies occasionally seen on the Reserve include another 11 species:- Dingy Skipper, Clouded Yellow, Large White, Small White, Small Copper, Silver-studded Blue, Adonis Blue, Holly Blue, Grayling and Small Heath. It also acts as a transit site for occasional insect and bird visitors. Section 1 (50m) Car park. Surrounding sheltered banks have Common Blue and are a haven for migrants such as Painted Ladies. Speckled Woods enjoy the dappled shade. Go up the steps to the next section. Section 2 (120m) Bear right past the information board. Follow the scrub edge over grass and vetches. Marbled Whites and, in late July/August a small number of Chalkhill Blues breed here. Common Blues, Small Skippers and Meadow Browns breed here. Section ends where you need to turn sharp left. Section 3 (120m) Path and scrub edge, staying on grass and herb area. Look out for Small Blue and Ringlets. Bear left; do not go down the very steep path. Go along to the end of the spur and stop where path descends steeply. End of section. Section 4 (80m) Turn round and follow the edges of steep bank on the right on thin soils with Birds-foot Trefoil and some Kidney Vetch. Rather wind exposed for butterflies, but look out for Blues. Section 5 (30m) Return towards entrance steps across grass. Some Common
Blues and Marbled Whites. NOTE: Off the Reserve to the south either from Section 5 or from the main road there is a public footpath on a quarry track going west along the Reserve edge. Go along the path until reaching the disused railway track along which is a footpath. Small Blues and Kidney Vetch are sometimes present here. |
